Overcoming Obstacles: The Origins of the Arrowsmith Program

The Arrowsmith Program of cognitive exercises originated from Barbara Arrowsmith-Young's personal journey to overcome her severe learning disabilities. Her story is detailed in the article "Building a Better Brain" and in Chapter 2 of "The Brain That Changes Itself" by Dr. Norman Doidge. Diagnosed in first grade with what would now be recognized as multiple learning disabilities, Barbara faced challenges such as reading and writing backwards, struggling with language concepts, getting lost frequently, and being physically uncoordinated. Through immense effort, she eventually learned to read and write from left to right and managed to conceal some symptoms of her learning disabilities. However, she continued to face difficulties with specific learning aspects throughout her academic journey.
